The list of fine paper mills in North America that are in trouble or closing is getting longer. Southworth Papers ofMassachusetts, West Linn Papers of Oregon and Appleton Coated of Wisconsin have either closed or are under creditor protection. Two of the mill manufactured coated grades and one of the mills dates back to 1839.

Appleton has been sold to liquidator who is trying to find a buyer. If not will liquidate the assets. Appleton Coated made coated grades and were sold in Canada. Southworth made uncoated grades. In 2012 they sold off their stationary brand to Neenah Papers who moved production to there own mills. West Linn Papers made web coated free sheets, inkjet and specialty packaging grades. They are winding down operations  . All blame the decline in demand for printing papers in North America. They have all tried to diversify but were not succesful.
